King of Saudi Arabia and the Custodian of Two Holy Mosques, Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, is on a visit to Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan.
During the first leg of his visit to Egypt, he met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. They discussed major regional and international issues, including hot Middle East issues such as the Arab-Israeli conflict, the stand-off between Iran and the West concerning Tehran’s nuclear program, and efforts for an Iraqi unified government.
On the second leg of his trip, Aziz will hold talks in Syria with Bashar al Assad on regional and international issues. An official Syrian news agency stated that the Syrian president personally met the Saudi monarch at Damascus airport, a departure from protocol reflecting the importance of the visit.
The Syrian government has advised the United States against interfering with a visit of Saudi King Aziz to Damascus and said the Syria and Saudi Arabia `know better` how to stabilize the Middle East.
Both the leaders are expected to visit Lebanon on Friday. Syria and Saudi Arabia have witnessed warmth in bilateral relations over the last year after years of cool relations.
